Celebrations of GARDENIA ‘09

auspicious beginning....A fiesta of cultural events and competitions commenced at Garden City College with the formal inaugural ceremony and lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The honoured guests who graced Gardenia 2009, the annual all India intercollegiate cultural and literary fest were, Dr. S. Ramananda Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and Mr. D.D. Purkayastha, MD and CEO Anand Bazar Patrika Pvt. Ltd, Kolkata. Prof. V.B. Coutinho, President, GCC Governing Council welcomed the participants while the host Dr. Joseph, V.G., Chairman, Garden City Group of Institutions thanked the Guests.
On the occasion Dr. Ramananda Shetty stressed upon the commitment of RGUHS in promoting extra-curriculum activities at its affiliated colleges. “Gardenia is great showcase of cultural and literary events,” he said. “It is only through such events that the students overall personality is moulded.” With 35 years of experience in the media industry, Mr Purkayastha spoke about the opportunities available for students and the need to use the opportunities in college to showcase the hidden talents.
Talking of the financial storm, he emphasized on setting robust standards in the various fields of the industry. The college campus was alive with an air of joy and festivity. A good number of students from more than 50 colleges participated in the many events on Day One. The Department of Journalism, Electronic Media and Communication held ‘Mock Press Conference’, The Media Quiz’, ‘The Page Maker’ and ‘Zoom’, a documentary competition under the banner ‘Crea-Shkaar’ which had overwhelming participation. ‘Moments’ under the Statistics Department featured ‘Lecture Contests’ and ‘Word Hunt’, ‘Vastrasamkala’ by the Department of Fashion and Apparel Design featured ‘Spot Shots’, ‘Origami’, ‘Drapes and Cowls’, ‘Colour Splash’ and ‘Eco Fashion’ while the Department of Mathematics hosted ‘Ganithotsava’ featuring a Puzzle, Where is Mathematics?, Time Attack and Project Presentation.
Aside, IT Gardenia was the event of the Department of Computer Science.
The festive mood was enhanced by groups of enthusiastic students who thronged all the venues including Art and Photo Exhibition Stalls. The Eat Outs put up by the Department of Hotel Management, with its assortment of mouth watering delicacies drew a large crowd. It is expected that this week long event will draw participation from many more colleges.
More fun...The second day of the six day long fiesta at Garden City College continued with the trend we started with the formal function, the fest had more than 56 colleges participating with more than 450 students. The guest of honour for the day was Mr. C S Murali, Vice President, Corporate Initiatives, Cognizant, Bangalore.
On the occasion, Mr C S Murali called upon the youth of the country not to panic about their future considering events witnessed across the world. “The question many of the students are asking revolve around their future,” he said. “There is no cause for alarm and they should not worry about things which are not in their hands, do the right things and you will surely be successful.”
Reflecting on India’s success at the Oscars, Mr. Murali said there is no dearth of talent in the country but should be exposed.
Acknowledging the efforts of the students and encouraging them to improve their soft skills, Cognizant Technologies presented the ‘Best Outgoing Student Awards’ to Ms. Marie Odeal D’Souza of MS in Communication and Mr. Immnuel R Vaiphei and Mr. Suraj Biswas of B.Sc. Computers.
The previous evening witnessed the valedictory function to honour the prize winners of the day.
The cultural events began with a bang. The stage was set on fire by the dazzling performances of the students from Garden City College who put up a stunning show that wrapped up the day’s programme.
