A MUCH AWAITED
FAREWELL
It was February 14 and it had
nothing to do with Valentine’s
Day. Who cares about it
anyway? (By the way this has nothing
to do with my ‘single but ready to
mingle status’) More than anything
else, it was a day my classmates and I
had been craving for over the years. It
marked the beginning of a new
chapter in our lives. A dawn was
slowly breaking into the midst of our
reach. This was our farewell day!
On reaching the campus premises,
I squinted to the sky above. It was a
picturesque eloquent blameless blue.
The wind wafted through my hair as
we eagerly waited for this day to come
true. Finally, the moment of truth
beckoned. It suddenly dawned on me
what to expect or cope with the
overwhelming emotions.
I was late again! On hearing my
name screeched out, I whirled around
and rushed towards the auditorium.
Just in time for a quick round of
snaps there. Then we hustled inside
with hordes of people bellowing as we
took our seats.
The vibe in its vicinity was palpable
already. ‘The cultural’s’ the first of the
two sessions witnessed participants
flaunting their singing and dancing
prowess. My feet tapped to the sound
of the beat when the DJ played Cold
play’s Viva la Vida, my favorite track.
The rhythmic beat of my heart soon
outpaced its normalcy. Amid the
entertaining games, award
presentations alternated with the
beats at regular intervals.
The second formal session kick
started with a power-point
presentation much to our delight.
The slide show had a collection of
pictures taken at different times
during our stint at the campus. The
chairman’s speech was brief but
enthralling and enlightening as is
always the case. This was followed by
Candle lighting. ‘Cake cutting’ was
also the highlight of the day’s
itinerary. How could I ever unlisted
the beautiful ‘Memento’ presented. It
has the photos of all the class of 2005
inscribed and shielded in a
transparent glass frame.
The sentimental feelings slowly
but started to cropped up as we
neared towards the end. I was up on
stage for the vote of thanks. As silence
filled the emptiness in its hour, it
hastened the arousal to reminiscence
within that short gasp of breath.
Aghast! I was taken aback with such a
bountiful yet a thrilling joyous ride we
endured over the years. One couldn’t
hide the emotions that soaked my
eyes, glistening as it streaked down my
cheeks.
I looked up to the daunting night
sky partially lit by streaks of countless
stars. I gazed till I closed my eyes
realizing the end of a fairytale, closing
the chapter of my college days. This
very night would bring a new dawn of
light again as I await a new chapter to
unfurl in my life. Then I board the
bus and huddled my way back to the
hostel.
I jotted down the article on my
behalf, to inscribe a lasting legacy to
the college (management, teachers
and staff) and especially my
classmates. Thanking the
management, our dearest junior’s,
MC’s, participants and to all whom I
owed my deepest thanks and heartiest
congratulation’s for its success
