  FORWARD EVER FOR A CAUSE
Kumari Sanchita of BBM, 4th Semester attended a special NSS camp and returned
to the campus feeling charged up and much closer to the whole unit that became a
family away from home.

started playing with us. The NSS
volunteers also took classes for
English and General Knowledge
subjects besides organizing certain
game shows. The kids were relived to
have a welcome break from their
otherwise routine and monotonous
schedule.

After sweating it out in the hot
and sweltering sun the whole
afternoon,
the team got to relax in the evening
listening to motivational lectures
from eminent personalities

Looking at our lives today, we
seem to be living for
ourselves and with each
passing day becoming more and more
materialistic than ever before. Even
more worrisome is the fact that
people tend to forget their
responsibilities towards the society.
Not surprising then, it is only a
hundred hearts among the millions
that feel the satisfaction and pleasure
of serving others and they re-instill in
us the values of love and care.
This opportunity was grabbed by
the volunteers of the National Service
Scheme (NSS) unit of Garden City
College at a week-long camp recently.
Having wholeheartedly participated at
the camp, they showed immense
interest and a rare dedication towards
their vocation.
Hum honge kamyab...ek din...
Day One: Horamavu Main Road.
There were echoes of the NSS all
round. Soon after, the inauguration
of the camp, the volunteers were
successful in tracing the Government
High School, Kalkare. This was to
become our destination for the next
six days besides it provided the
opportunity to offer our services to
the society.
The activities kicked off at the
health camp. A medical check up for
the odd 610 school students was
conducted in collaboration with the
students of Garden City College of
Nursing. As soon as we entered the
school premises, some of these kids
started screaming in fear upon seeing
a doctor and the students clad in
white aprons. They were under the
impression that they would be given
injections. However, we managed to
calm them down and within not time
they had overcome their fears and
Day Two: Sports competitions
were organized at the camp for the
benefit of students of the 5th, 6th
and 7th classes and more than 230
students took part in the events. The
events featured a 50 meters sprint,
lemon and spoon race and Kabbadi,
both boys and girls. During these
events, it was evident that these
underprivileged children possess high
energy levels, great endurance and
were equal an enthusiastic batch
For those in the junior section,
there were shows conducted
showcasing cartoon characters, Tom
and Jerry and Lion King.
After sweating it out in the hot
and sweltering sun the whole
afternoon, the team got to relax in
the evening listening to motivational
lectures from eminent personalities
drawn from the college. The talks
were followed by a cultural
programme and jam session before

the volunteers retired for the day.
The same energy and spirit ruled
the next day too. The team stitched
for the children their uniforms and
then gave away prizes to the students
who had excelled in sports and
academics.
8th March is recognized world
wide as International Women’s Day
and the volunteers celebrated the day
in the most meaningful way they
could ever have imagined. Rangoli
competitions were organized for the
women and girls of the village and the
winners presented with gifts. The
team also resolved to make the planet
green and planted more than 25
saplings at the school’s premises. The
same day, a street play was enacted by
the NSS volunteers as part of the
awareness campaign based on the
themes on prohibition of abortion of
became so close to the children and it
was sad to bid them adieu. We
thanked the school management
wholeheartedly for extending their
support to the venture.
We also bid farewell to the final
year volunteers at the college who
showed love and affection by
dedicating to them songs and dances.
The camp had brought so much
closeness and cohesion among the
members and the whole NSS unit
became a family away from home. I
hope all of them carry the endless
memories of the camp and cherish
them for days to come, forever.
With lots of hard work, efforts
and collected efforts, the camp turned
out to be a great success as every
participant supported the other and
played a significant role.
Soon, it was time to get back to
the college having bid farewell to the
school children and the village folks
What they had to say....
Along with the physical involvement,
students showed psychological and
emotional attachment. These are
what some of them had to say...
“I discovered myself in a new way. I
learned how to share and work in a
team. This was my first camp and it
really helped me in discovering my
own strengths.”
Pritam, 2nd Sem. Biotechnology.
“This camp re-instilled in me my
older principles of emotions.
Although I was not conversant in
local language Kannada, it was never
a barrier in my communication with
the village folks or a hurdle to my
work.”
Moumita Sanyal, 2nd Sem. Genetics.
“Getting close to school children and
the villagers opened a different world
for me. I felt I was part of their lives
and this was motivation enough for
me to serve the society with greater
enthusiasm.”
Pankaj Satapthy,
B.Sc. Biotechnology &
Kumari Sanchita, BBM,
Student Coordinator, NSS
girl child, child labour, girl education
and early marriages. The message was
cast in Kannada for the benefit of the
local community to create awareness
on the ills of such practices.
As part of the adventure activities,
the volunteers left for a trekking trip
to Shivagangae located more than 60
kilometres from Bangalore. It was
quite an exhausting trip but once we
scaled the hill top, we forgot about
our discomforts. One could feel the
peace and eternity in the small temple
top which energized the team even
more.
The last day of the camp was
emotional. During these days, we
