Because of these threats, there is need for exceptional and special people who risk their lives in the service of the society by helping maintain safety and peaceful coexistence, like Mr. Anand. Here, in the fourth of a five-part series, Ashok Shah, BA (Journalism) alumnus of GCC makes an attempt to unravel some of the moments in the life of one of the many people in the profession of providing security.
Excerpts from the Chat:1. Tell us about our childhood. I was born and brought up in Karnataka. I used to be a quiet but very naughty child. I was always nterested in my studies even though school was far from home, I never missed any classes. My childhood, on the whole was a very pleasant experience. I wish I were a child forever (giggling).
2. What do you miss about your childhood?
Though it was a little difficult walking to school everyday, I now miss the routine trek to school the most. Only had to study and play, that's it. Now, I miss my friends at school very much. Those were the most beautiful days.
3. What did you want to become as a child and as an adolescent?
I wanted to get into a government job. That's what I tried for. I appeared twice for the Karnataka Administrative Service exam and once for CBI exams. But I could not get through any of them. I guess it's because I had to take care of my parents and three sisters and I could not concentrate properly while preparing for these exams. I really regret for not having cleared the exams, my life otherwise would have been totally different from now.
4. What are your responsibilities as a Security Supervisor?
I have to keep track of students and visitors at the campus and the items entering and leaving the college premises. That's why I have to be on duty from 7 am to 7 pm. I have to maintain records of all activities that sum up the college security processes.
5. What do you like/ dislike about your job?
I love writing job. And I am happy that I have been promoted to be Security Supervisor. But the job like others can be a trifle monotonous.
6. Do you get frustrated? How do you pass time while on duty?
Yes, I often get frustrated. But now I have learnt to take everything in my stride. I do like meeting new people and that relieves me of all my anguish.
I do pass time mostly by reading newspapers. I like to read a lot. Then there are people passing by and the green environment on campus. Sometimes I walk through the gardens.
7. For how long have you been in this job?
For the past 10 years I've been in this field. The first three years, I worked at ITI. Since then, I've been working at GCC.
