The story of the movie revolves around the lives of four characters – Sam aka Sameer (Abhishek Bachhan), Kunal (John Abraham), Neha (Priyanka Chopra) and Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol). Neha, a 27 year old “Single and ready to mingle” girl stays with her aunt Sushmita Mukerjee. She wants female tenants for her huge mansion but ends up meeting Sam and Kunal. As any other common aunt, she is concerned about her niece’s safety and turns them away. Left with no other option, Sam and Kunal make up a story that they are a gay couple and somehow manage to find the much needed shelter As the story goes on, they come close to each other and thus end up being best pals. As usual, where there is friendship, love follows. Even Sam and Kunal aren’t spared from cupid’s arrows and they fall in love with the same girl, Neha. Here comes our “Guy perfect” Abhimanyu, who happens to be Neha’s boss. They both start liking each other and soon fall in love. Subsequently, both Sam and Kunal can’t tolerate this. This is where the problem begins. But “picture to abhi baki hai mere dost”! To find out what destiny plans for these four people, you have to grab the tickets and rush to your nearest theatre.
Chota B, generally known to be a truly versatile actor of his kind is as usual remarkable. Piggy Chops comes in an all new “hatke avataar” in this movie, and even the muscle man Johnny has acted well. The movie also stars Bomam Irani and Kirron Kher who has given a new dimension to the comedy. It is true that without them, the movie would have been incomplete. The scene where a confused Kirron Kher, the mom of Sam, blesses both Sam and Kunal as a mother-in-law without knowing whether Kunal is her “Bahu” (daughter-in-law) or “Damad (son-in-law)” will take your breath away. The styling of the stars has been done by Karan Johar’s all time favorite, Manish Malhotra (for Priyanaka Chopra) and Aki Narula.
All four of them according to their characters have got different looks in the movie and they all appear absolutely stunning. Abhishek, being a “cool dude”, John the “power chap” and Bobby with the “geek-total” look and of course Priyanka, being the center of attraction has to look dazzling. Take it from me; she has never ever looked so sizzling anytime earlier. Even Shilpa Shetty is an eye candy for all in the song “Shut up and bounce”. both in English and Hindi. Youngsters have already started swinging to its tunes. Not to forget, the Punjabi track “Maa Da Laadla” that is a great hit. I can thus conclude that the music album is quite happening and a “must buy” for all youngsters.
Critically speaking, Dostana is a very light hearted comedy flick, of course, but comedy seems to be a new entry in K Jo’s dictionary. Earlier, we have seen the man delivering typical romantic family movies like – “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham”, and “Kal Ho Na Ho. This time, Karan Johar has tried his hand on a so called “taboo” in the Indian society – one of being gay. The very word gay makes us think other wise but the way the Johar camp has treated the subject in the movie is very lightly and its not at all vulgar. Throughout the movie, the so called gay couples, Sam and Kunal entertained the audience to the fullest. In addition, the movie has showcased the true essence of friendship. Generally, friendship of this kind is rarely seen in Hindi movies where two guy friends don’t hesitate at all to prove themselves gay (though they are not) in front of the whole world to make their gal happy. The way these two have been shown in the movie showering love on each other and also standing besides each other in times of crisis is rare. In the movie they have created a hell lot of “paagalpan” just to bring a smile on each other’s face which makes the movie a must watch for all guys and girls who share this kind of bonding. Thus most fittingly named - Dostana.
All that can be said is that this time Karan Johar can rest assured, probably with a cup of “Koffee”, because Dostana will definitely work for him after his disastrous “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” which dealt with extra marital affairs, again another taboo which was a failure at the box office.
So guys and gals who are saturated with the syllabus, stressed out with studies, just take a break and go watch the movie to enjoy a hearty laugh of a lifetime. Don’t forget to check out the climax of the movie, it is really unprecedented yet funny.
