Talking Movies

Pixar Animations has yet another credit to its line of makebelieve animated movies. This time, it’s the production of WALL-E, a story based on the life of a harmless robot that falls in love with an armed robot, Eve. The movie also highlights another powerful message of the disintegration of earth by human neglect reflects Maneshka Silva.

WALL-E, WHICH stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class, is seen toiling faithfully everyday to clear up the garbage left behind by the humans who inhabited earth many years back.

The robot, which was left behind when the humans were vacating the earth, leads a solitary and lonely life with his one and only friend, a cockroach that accompanies him wherever he goes.

The robot collects scraps of garbage which he finds interesting and leads a relatively content life, until Eve – a sleek, white, smooth but dangerous robot on a mission from space to find life - makes an appearance.

Eve, which stands for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, is a reconnaissance robot who is armed with a directive as she goes about her work searching every inch of the earth for some hint of life. When WALL-E sets his eyes on her, he falls in love at first sight. Thereafter, he trails her everywhere until she finally relents and acts cordially towards him. WALLE -E
shows off everything in an attempt to impress his love. But the most impressive item he presents to her is a tiny sapling. Thus, the adventure and a love story unfold.

The Director of the movie, Andrew Stanton has fed a lot of innocence to the rusted waste collecting robot who is hooked on Hello Dolly’, the theme song of the movie that is played throughout the movie.

This makes him a hopeless romantic at heart, always dreaming of holding hands with the one he loves. WALL-E is brought to life by Ben Burtt and Elissa Knight renders Eve’s voice.

The makers of Finding Nemo have really done a remarkable job of reaching out to the audience with the innocence and the perseverance of both WALL-E and Eve’s characters. There is not much dialogue in the movie, but it is the expressions, the tone, and the sequence of events that entice the audience and mesmerizes them till the end. Imagination is the key word in this beautifully crafted animation movie, where the audience connects well with the robots working hand in hand to bring some semblance of justice to a neglected human race.

Pixar has always been one step ahead in the animation world, blending technology, creativity, imagination and adding humanity to top up their production. The subtle but powerfully presented message never fails to grasp the attention of the audience. WALL-E is no exception. It addresses a growing concern that spells out disaster for the future of this ‘third rock from the sun’. The excessive garbage had made it impossible for humans to live on earth anymore. The audience is taken through many emotions while watching the adorable expressions of both WALL-E and Eve, at times laughing at the clumsy but cute stunts that WALL-E pulls off, and at the same time feeling sympathetic for the badly kept robot.

This ‘feel-good’ animation is an ideal family movie that keeps you wanting to see more of WALL-E and Eve’s adventures. However, those who crave action ad thrill may not find all the ‘romanticism’ and the ‘cuteness’ that hangs heavily throughout the movie acceptable.
