But somehow it doesn’t apply to microorganisms. They are untouched by human rules. They fight and they fight to win. They can bring down the greatest of giants to their knees. They can devour oil spills, bring down huge mountains of dough and wipe out a large population in war or opponents a thousand times their size and seemingly insurmountable and do what would never be in human capacity. They can be loyal friends too. Had it not been for them, our delicacies like wine, beer, cheese etc wouldn’t have existed. Treatments which we have taken for granted, antibiotics which we gulp down or receive as an injection wouldn’t have existed either.
Hormone production, gene therapy amongst others would probably have appeared to be some science fiction than a reality. Now they have even been manipulated to be used as weapons in war - Biowarfare. So we can’t ignore them for their significance. They co-exist with us, invisible to us due to our limited visual capacities. But they do exist. So for them and the people ever mesmerized and enthralled by these visually minute but significantly huge organisms, we devote ‘Sukshma Shristi’, the Microbiology Club. ‘Sukshma Shristi’ means Minute Creation - the Microbes. The club was inaugurated on September 30, 2008 at the GCC
auditorium. The occasion was graced by the chief guest, Mr.Yogisha S, eminent scientist at Jubilant Biosys Limited, Dr. K.C John Principal - Garden City College, HODs of various departments, faculty and students. The event commenced with a welcome note delivered by Shyamlal U.V. This was followed by a prayer song by Kshama .V. and a welcome dance by Sujatha. Thereafter the lamp lighting by the Chief Guest, Mr.Yogisha .S. accompanied by the
Principal, Dr. K.C John, HOD Ms. Sheeja M.S. and the Convener of the Club, Ms Kirana Shekar. The highlight of the day was a talk on ‘Drug Discovery’ delivered by Yogisha .S. The talk gave an insight on the differences between the companies involved in drug discovery and those involved in drug manufacture, the work carried out in the respective field, the current scenario in regard to various pharmaceutical giants of the country and abroad besides opportunities for life science students.
A presentation was made by Saptarshi Chatterjee, Priyanka and Prayashi students of M.Sc.
Microbiology on the evolution, scope and significance of Microbiology.
Sukshma Srishti has completed one year of its existence. The club was initiated not to limit the
knowledge of Microbiology to the pages of the text and within the confines of classrooms and laboratories but to relate the students with the knowledge of the current development of the subject at the industrial and research level. The club has it notice board ,’AGNOSCO’ which aims to be an interface between those related to microbiology and those who are unaware of the intriguing, enthralling and engaging organisms to help them realize how critical these organisms are to life and all living forms.
The club, though still at its infancy, foresees immense potential and a great role for itself. Part of this will be needed to chanelise it to promote a scientific temperament amongst the students and promote science even to the strata of the society hitherto not reached. A small step in nation building! |
