Looking at the participants and the response the whole exercise
evinced, maintaining some semblance of road safety is not feat beyond us.

“We all have the ability to make it happen,” said a volunteer at the
venue. “The way forward is to observe simple safety measuresusing helmet, caring for other road users and curb unnecessary stunts on the roads.”

It is evident that even if a single incident of road accident that takes place in a far corner of the country has a direct effect on others elsewhere. A quick glance at the statistics indicates that the situation is more appalling in developing nations. It is for this reason that the
immense support provided by the Chairman, Dr. Joseph V.G. is a step in the right direction, a very timely gesture indeed. In a country like India, it is certainly not possible to do away with the bike but we can make biking, a safe adventure for both the bikers and road users.
That is something within our reach. By lending his voice to the mission of his students, the chairman has expressed an understanding of the situation and provided a way forward. Thanks to his vision, at GCC, no one is allowed to park without helmet, a policy that has
been followed long before the state
government launched the campaign for use of helmets.

The overwhelming backing to the GCC Bikers Club is a message that we cannot deny the youth their only affordable means of conveyance. The successful conclusion of the expedition has proved that biking as an adventure sports can be safe and fun too. The other message stemming from the venture is that we cannot just speak of road safety and national integration just once. Reinforcement is a necessity. The fact that the ‘Suraksha Sanskriti’ will be a long celebration of safety across the city and beyond is a telling statement. Students will now engage in a series of awareness campaigns not only on campus but across the city. Such efforts will surely reduce the rate of accidents. This besides the regular campaigns by the college on other issues such as environment, pollution, bio diversity and natural disasters puts GCC at an elevated position. There are several laws in place to help out but they can only be successful through change of attitude. We surely cannot stand mute spectators anymore. Garden City College has surely
taken its stand.

'The woods are lovely dark and deep And I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep'

SAID ROBERT FROST. But at Garden City College we do not believe S e in falling asleep before we have covered our miles, because here at GCC, “Emphasis is on life”. So when two members of our biking club set out to cover new grounds, they actually set out to celebrate life, to look at life in all its colours and textures. And as always, they carried the GCC flag to the highest point, literally and figuratively. The two young ambassadors of GCC traveled the length of the country and took their flag from the southernmost point in Kanyakumari to the northernmost tip in Ladakh.

Though the idea was conceived within a few days, it needed vision, confidence and faith to carry it through.

The only person the students could look up to, for guidance is our beloved Chairman Dr. Joseph V.G. His faith in the students, his conviction towards the cause, his confidence and enthusiasm to the efforts, and his eye for minute details, inspired the students to
embark on a journey few have dared to undertake.

On July 14, 2008, Rahul Devnath and Rahul Kumar of the Biker’s Club of Garden City College rode out of the gates of the College to carry forward the message of Suraksha’–safety and Sanskriti’-culture, to Kanyakumari. They traveled more than 1700 kms and were welcomed back to the campus five days later on 19th July, 2008 amidst cheer and thunderous applause. The first part of their mission was successfully accomplished.
