Arm Chair Travelogue Sikkim, small and beautiful state of Himalayan regions, is home to many different cultures and traditions. But the most enchanting thing about this tourist destination is the fact that it's one of the oldest silk routes of India, and a border state with China. Bordering Nepal and Bhutan on either sides, it also has the distinction of being still untouched by human settlements and close to nature. However, a glance at Gangtok shows that the bubble of modernization has burst with a bang in the town. The capital is definitely not behind the rest of the world in terms of urbanization - broad roads, flyovers, posh markets, state-of-art hospitals, educational institutes, fast food outlets, discothèques, and all other modern amenities that the heart craves. Very close to Darjeeling, Gangtok is a tourist paradise for its natural beauty, culture and handcrafts. Gangtok literally means the top of a hill. Around 30,000 people make up the town, and sure it is the largest in Sikkim. In recent times it has developed somewhat haphazardly and can get quite congested during the peak summer season. But other times, and away from the main hub of town, there are delightful walks with great natural scenery and some excellent views of Mt. Khangchendzonga. The town's ambience thrives on the blend of tradition and modernity. There is a sense of calm and serenity, symbolized by the stupas and monasteries. Deer Park:
