In pursuant of the theme, '2007- GCC Year of the Environment', the Chairman, Dr Joseph V.G. planted a sapling to mark the occasion of Founder's Day and Reunion 2007 at the GCC Campus.
In an interview broadcast on Radio Mirchi, he spoke on his commitment to environmental
conservation.

EXCERPTS FROM INTERVIEW

Radio Mirchi RJ: Garden City College. The name itself reflects the city. Is it a consciously or coincidently?
Chairman, GCC: Consciously, we have done it and it is to make our institution a role model in respecting the environment. Garden City is the first name of Bangalore. We have named the College so in terms of respect for environment.

Radio Mirchi RJ: Is there a garden in GCC? How green is GCC?
Chairman, GCC: At GCC, it's not only the students' careers that blossom. The campus itself has greenery all over. More than 100 trees, Rose Gardens and saplings are well tended and students are custodians of saplings planted as part of 'One Crore Tree Worldwide Initiative'.

Radio Mirchi RJ: How were you celebrating World Environment Day?
Chairman, GCC: We are planning to plant one crore trees world wide in support of all whoever is working at GCC, Workshops, seminars and planting saplings in and around the campus have been a regular feature.

Radio Mirchi RJ: What is this 'Hasire Usiru'?
Chairman, GCC: This is an initiative to give back to our city, its lost greenery. GCC in association with Radio Mirchi, hopes to reach to millions of environment enthusiasts.

Radio Mirchi RJ: How seriously does GCC take environment?
Chairman, GCC: We believe the environment is our very existence. If we take care of the environment today, there will be something for us and the future generations can look forward to a peaceful existence. In this line, we are planning an environmental management system for ISO 14001.

Radio Mirchi RJ: Are there any courses that GCC offers in Environment studies?
Chairman, GCC: Chairman, GCC: We do not have any courses on environment studies but concern for the environment forms the basis of activities on campus including those of NCC cadets, NSS, Social Work, and Mission 5, amongst others. Seeing the campus rose garden and other plantation students see and develop respect for environment. We foster students towards environment friendly attitude.

Radio Mirchi RJ: What is the best thing about GCC? Why should someone study at GCC?
Chairman, GCC: Education at GCC is a life changing experience. With students from more than 53 countries, and every state of the country, the college is well placed to shape the future of tomorrow's leaders. Emphasis is on Life.

Radio Mirchi RJ: Would you like to go back to college?
