He could well have
announced his arrival as a young and
enterprising gentleman with
tremendous potential to do well
in his chosen field. Yes, he is
Ssentongo Douglas, a third year
Bachelor of Business
Management student from
Uganda.
With a firm resolve to graduate
with honours, Douglas has
always endeavoured to secure a
great future. He is focused and
determined to succeed. On
campus, he is someone you can
always look up to when you
need the extra help in or outside
the classroom. GCC World
Correspondents,Vibha Luvenia m and Dharmik
engaged a lovely chat with the
humble Gardenian.
Up Close & Candid GCC World: Congratulations of
being the Gardenian of the
Month. How would you like to
introduce yourself to the
readers? Douglas: Thank you! To begin, I
owe my success to the one
above, family, GCC and my
friends. I am in my final year of
the Bachelor of Business
Management course and hail
from Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. GCC World: Tell us something
about your family and
childhood? Douglas: I come from a humble
Christian background, a family of
eight, my sister and six brothers.
My father is a business
consultant back home while my
mother heads an NGO working
for the welfare of Aids orphans. My childhood was a journey of
numerous experiences that
taught me the simple fact that
the world expects many things
from us. GCC World: Uganda to India,
how do you feel being in this
land of diversities? Douglas: (Smiles) India! It is a
good country. I appreciate the
people for what they are, that is
the reason I find my stay
comfortable. I have had pleasant
moments in the country and do
not regret having made the
decision to come over. What I
dislike is the habit of spitting in
public places and looking at
those of dusky descent as in a
funny way. GCC World: Why did you opt for
BBM and what next after the
course? Douglas: Life is all about
management. They say charity
begins at home. Likewise, if I
learn how to manage my life, I
will effectively be able to
manage others. I would like ot
help underprivileged children,
preferably HIV/Aids affected
orphans.
Reading through
your work profile, it is evident
you are a person who likes
interacting with different kinds of
people. If that is true, tell us your
reasons and how you manage to
keep cool and patient with
people from different walks of
life?
(thoughtful) for
everyone I meet, he or she
completes my step in life. ‘No
man is an Island, so they say. I
believe there is a lot to learn
from each and everyone. God
has given me the ability to love
people and that is what I simply
do.
How do you
manage your time-studies,
sports, drama and community
service.Douglas:
Time is controlled by
man and it should not be the
other way round. GCC World: Your role in drama? Douglas: I have always been an actor and at times a writer. I love to take
part in plays with a social
message.
What does GCC
mean to you?
I am proud to be a
Gardenian and will always carry
high the flag of GCC. The
college has given me the
platform to live up to my
potential. GCC World: Best and worst
moments at GCC? Douglas: I have had a good time
at the college. Which one do I
pick?
One sad incident took place
when I had just joined the
college. I was in the college bus
and the seat next to me was
vacant. A lady boarded the bus
and remained standing. I offered
her the seat but she declined
and remained standing all the
way. I was shocked and felt
insulted. GCC World: Message to
Gardenians? Douglas: Tomorrow belongs to
those who prepare for it today..
Make the best use of all
opportunities you get every day.
Life is full of hurdles but these
should not put you down you are
still they same wonderful person
you have always been. Always
thank and be proud of being a
Gardenian because few people
get the privilege of studying in a
first class college like we do.
Appreciate every one for whom
they are because they are to
assist you in the walks of life. Let
it be a security guard at the gate,
that person is put there to assist
you. Life is a not a brief candle
for us. It is a sort of splendid
torch we have got hold of for the
moment and we should make it
burn as brightly as possible
before passing it on to future
generations. If you put in efforts
to do something always do your
best and you will be rewarded.
Sorrows are an inevitable part of
life but you must never forget
that you are stronger than your
sorrow. The road to success is
not straight. There is a curve
called failure, a loop called
confusion, speed bumps called
bad friends, red lights called
enemies, caution lights called
family. You will have flats called
jobs. But if you have a spare
wheel called determination and
an engine called perseverance,
insurance called faith, you will
make it to a place called
success. Always be positive..
