Having an excellent academic record
comprising of graduation, post graduation and a doctorate
in veterinary sciences from the university
sciences from the University of Agricultural
Sciences (UAS), Bangalore with distinction
and Gold Medal. Continuing his interests in
academia, he has worked as a teacher,
researcher and as an extension educator and
assumed office of Assistant Professor,
Associate Professor and Professor & Head,
Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, UAS,
Bangalore for more than three decades. His
interest in his chosen path made him delve
into the latent secrets of life, which has
brought him many accolades.
Some of his salient contributions
have been the identification of the virus
causing the "Hydro pericardium syndrome"
in poultry, which created havoc among the
poultry farmers and with his instructions
for the control and prevention of the
disease, the affected poultry framers could
come out of the stranglehold of the disease
and saving themselves from penury. The
first time study of the pathological
significance of "equine infectious anemia"
and the identification of the re-emergence
of Infectious Bovine Rhinotrachietis from
an imported herd have made race horse
owner and dairy farmers more aware of the
diseases and their control.
As an academician and
researcher he has put five doctoral and 35
Master's scholars through their paces as
major guide and has further guided 150
students through their post graduate studies. He has published in all
225 scientific and popular articles papers, in
international and popular English and 10
language journals throwing light on varied
scientific research for the betterment of
livestock and poultry farmers in the
country.
With his rich experience, he was
selected Director of the Institute of Animal
Health and Veterinary Biologicals in
Bangalore - the premier institution for the
production of nationality renowned animal
vaccines and other biologicals used in the
detection of animal diseases. It was during
his tenure, that a Southern Regional Disease
Diagnostic Laboratory was established to
cater to the southern states. He streamlined
the functioning of the institute raising it to
inter national standards an d was
instrumental in the development of an
effective polyvalent vaccine for blue tongue
in sheep and a tissue culture for rabies in
animals, saving many a human and animal
life and enormous foreign exchange. And in
collaboration with the Health and Family
Welfare Department of the Government
of Karnataka, a human vaccine for the
Kyasnur Forest Disease was produced for
the first time in the country. The institute
received an ICAR research project for the
diagnosis of leptospirosis, which is taking a
big toll inland and coastal areas. The project
has developed molecular methods and has
been effectively saving man and animals
from leptospirosis with early diagnosis.
It was also during this time that
the institute was recognized as the Southern
Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory
for the South of India, with a build up of
infrastructure, equipment and manpower.
An exclusive wildlife disease diagnostic
laboratory was also established at the
Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) with
modern equipment for the first time in the
country.
His research interests have taken
him to countries of the Far East, Middle
East, Europe and Australia. His scientific
acumen has brought him national laurels
and accolades and has also earned him the
position on many university
panels of examiners and selectors
throughout the country. He is a much
sought after speaker especially in
connection with topics related to the
poultry industry. His rich experience is
much sought after and is a member of
Advisory Committees of many of the top
animal sciences institutions and zoos in the
country. Recognizing his services, both to
the state and the country, he has been
awarded with more than sixteen state level
as well as national level awards. He was also
awarded Lifetime Achievement Award 2002
by Karnataka Veterinary Association. He is
the recipient of the National Compound
Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association
Award (CLFMA) 2004 for his outstanding
achievement and contributions to the
Livestock Industry. He has also been
awarded the First Karuna Award - 2004
from the Karuna Trust for National
Progress for his achievements in livestock
industry.
The love for animals made him
take up the study of animal sciences and has
excelled him a niche in the hearts of
livestock and poultry farmers and the
veterinary profession in the country. He is
now, the man at the helm of affairs, of the
teaching, research and the administration of
the temples of learning connected with all
forms of animal life in the State of
Karnataka, for he is now the first ever Vice
chancellor of the new Karnataka
Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences
University, Bidar.
