Smt. Usha K R is the Associate Editor of the Management Review, the official newsletter of the
prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. An avowed reader and writer of repute, she
was the Guest of Honour on the inaugural day of Gardenia 2007, the all India intercollegiate fest
of Garden City College. GCC World to her on the sidelines of the festivities.
Excerpts from the Interview:
Q. How does it feel to come to the GCC campus?
A. (Pleased). It's a double delight to visit this college- to be in Garden City College in the Garden City. This makes me extremely happy.
Q: You mentioned in your speech the merits of reading. Are you passion about books?
A: I am a voracious reader - fiction, social sciences and the humanities appeal to me. Since I am in a profession where I am called upon to edit management journals, now I get time to read these
as well.
Q: You have dabbled in writing. What according to you makes a good writer?
A: Basically, you should be a very greedy reader. I have noticed that people who read a lot churn out remarkable books. The foundation of good writings is hinged on reading. Moreover, one should
interact with people on a regular basis. Many of the characters in books are derived from day to day life.
An observant person makes an excellent writer.
Q: How important is solitude in an author's life?
A: Wordsworth once remarked that emotion recollected in tranquility is the best. Tranquility always offers one the time and space to mull over things. But then as a writer, you have to have
touch with the world and its people. A proper balance is important.
Q: Tell us something about your teaching experiences.
A: When I look back, I realize that I have learnt immensely from my students. They have surprised me with their ingenuity and their viewpoint on so many occasions. There have been times when you
get comments from sources you least. Teaching has taught me a certain kind of humility and brought about self-awareness.
Q: How has your stint at IIM-B been? What is the focus of your newsletter?
A: When joined, I had no clue about the world of business. I have picked up things along the way and when you work in an institution of such stature, there is a visible difference in standards,
scales and expectations. You get exposure at a different level all together.
