Dr. Srimani is one of India's first lady mathematicians. With experiences spanning over three
decades in research and training, she is the proud recipient of Aryabhatta Award and the Bharat
Jyoti Award for her excellence with numbers. Untouched or rather unfazed by these accolades, she
continues to lead her life as a mathematics student. GCC World caught up with this idol of
humility during Gardenia 2007 where she was the Guest of Honour and gave a new meaning to
mathematics
Excerpts from the Interview:
Q: As students, most of us have this phobia towards mathematics. How can one get over it?
A: (Laughs) Mathematics shapes our personality in every possible way. Application, not
accumulation of this knowledge helps. So you can say that sometimes I use my mathematical
knowledge to formulate my cooking as well.
Q: As a student, how did you deal with problems posed by mathematics?
A: I always take problems as a prelude to solutions and further learning. These solutions always
bring along a lot of joy and sharing. The results are the ultimate pleasure.
Q: What brought you to great honour from being an ordinary graduate?
A: The beauty and chicanery of mathematics always gripped me. I always scored well in this
subject
but the thirst for knowledge was intact. Later, I applied mathematical knowledge to various other
fields such as biotechnology and crystal growth.
Q: What is your advice to students and budding mathematicians?
A: I again stress on getting the basics right. Be regular in every day life. Use libraries and
the Internet instead of depending on the knowledge acquired within the four walls of a classroom.
Sincerity and sacrifice is the mantra for students who want to embrace success |
