Fourteen years later, India, and the world, can still feel the reverberations of the blasts that
ripped apart the fabric of our ostensibly secular, seemingly tolerant, somewhat cosmopolitan society.
Black Friday is the story about the bomb blasts which took place in Mumbai in 1993. These blasts
were connected to Babri Masjid demolition and Hindu-Muslim riots. Babri Masjid was destroyed by
Hindus as they felt that it was constructed over the site of a temple and in reality had played
into the hands of the politicians. During this time many Muslim women were raped, children were
molested, men were burnt alive in open street and also houses were burnt down .
To avenge themselves of these inhuman acts, the Muslims decide to teach a lesson to the rest f
the population. So, tiger memom(Pavan Malhotra) declares, “akkha Mumbai ko jala dalenga”. He
chalks out a plan to blast a bomb in the over crowded street of Mumbai. This makes sure that the
scars of Indian misgoverance would never be forgotten.
He calls some Muslims and infuses in them the poison of hatred and instructs them to seek their
revenge. The bomb blasts takes place in crowded areas such as the Stock Exchange, Sea Rock Hotel
etc. People could not care less about blood shed. Blood flows like water on the streets Mumbai.
After the bomb blasts Tiger Memom asks every one to stay out of sight of the police,
in short go underground and he flees to Dubai, the paradise of underworld people.
The cop in charge of the investigation (Kay Kay Menon)of this case begins his work. His first
arrest is the manager of tiger memom. Slowly, he arrests all the people working under Tiger
Memom, responsible for the riots. In the end, Badshah Khan(Aditya Srivastava)who used to work for
Tiger spills the beans on Tiger when he realizes that he had made false promises and has left
them in India to suffer. He tells the police from where they procured their weapons and how they
were sent to Pakistan for training and how they were taught to make bombs.
Out of 122 people only 100 were found guilty. Tiger Memom is still free. The movie also showed
how the suspects were picked up and tortured, rubbishing all claims of human rights violations. The things shown in the movie just chill one to the bones. Who says the lesson of history has
been learnt? The terror is still unbelievable. The peddlers of politics of hate are still active and the Indian state is still clueless as black Fridays, Thursdays and Saturdays increasingly
become a part of world and national politics.
It appears to be film difficult to make yet the director has managed to do justice to the true
story. He has grappled with all the loose threads and put them together in a composite whole. It
is a powerful, and hard-hitting cinema that needs to be seen not just for entertainment but for
contemplation as well. The movie is adapted from S. Hussain Zaidi's book. Background songs are by
the band 'Indian Ocean'. The movie is total paisa vasool. And while watching one must think over
what Gandhi ji had once remarked -an eye for an eye makes whole world blind
