Every time I have to put this band in a particular genre, they have
successfully spun me around and left me into nothing. One thing I have learnt is that you cannot categorize good music.
Staind has its roots in Massachusetts, USA. The band was formed by lead singer/guitarist Aaron Lewis and lead guitarist Mike Mushok. Both these
individuals had a classic/acoustic background in guitars. Johnny April supplies bass while Jon Wysocki handles the percussions.
Tormented was their self released debut that came out in 1996. The
band was discovered by the Fred Durst, the front man of the famous band,
Limp Bizkit. Staind has released four more albums since then namely Dysfunction. Break the Cycle, 14 Shades of Grey and Chapter V. Hits
like Its been a While, Zoe Jana, Epiphany, Outside and So Far Away followed.
Their music has been put into genres like nu, progressive, heavy and
many others. The acoustic guitar of Aaron Lewis blends with the heavy sounds of Mike Mushok's Ibanez baritone guitar sending soul stirring
ripples down the spines of many.
The album, Dysfunction came out on the Flip records label in 1999,
achieving platinum-plus status thanks to songs like Just Go, Mud Shovel and Home. A cut on the Family Values Tour 1999 CD, Outside, became #1
rock single, while a hit version also appeared on Staind's next album, 2001's Break the Cycle made the band certified superstars, with It's
Been A While spending 16 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart. A gold-certified MTV Unplugged DVD followed in 2002, with 2003 seeing
the release of the critically-acclaimed 14 Shades of Grey, a CD that was praised by the New York Post for its 'intense, propulsive melodies'
and lauded as a 'slow-burn collection' with 'staying power'. 14 Shades of Grey marked the band's second #1 entry on the Billboard Top 200
album chart.
The latest album Chapter V gives us a deeper insight into their
journey. The 12 song album features the first single, the classic, mid-tempo and dynamic Right here, the edgy, dark Falling and
'Schizophrenic conversations' with a retro feel to it. Chapter V is Staind at their best, with songs ranging from the forceful to the
quiet. The instantly recognizable and soulful vocals are teamed up with the catchy rhythms and leads of Mike Mushok supported well by the bass
and drums.
Staind is happy with the growth evinced on Chapter V, and while they
know fans worship Tormented and Dysfunction, to mine similar musical or lyrical territory would be to regress, at least Aaron Lewis feels so.
Unlike the rock star, pepped up life style, Staind has maintained a low profile and sober image. But this rather calm and
composed approach to rock tells nothing about the tempest rising in their music and lyrics. This very approach is in vogue thanks to front
man Aaron Lewis, his quality being inversely proportional to the show there is in the industry
