Dr.Ali Irani has beeen associated with the Indian Cricket Team for years as a Physiotherapist. Having completed his graduation from M.S University,Baroda, he opted to study sports medicine in Mumbai. He has worked for a decadeiw the Indian Cricket Team and also set up free physiotherapht camps in Kutch after the 2001 earthquake.
A proud recepient of the Ultra Oration Award in Physiotherapy. GCC World got an opportunity to speak to the gem of a man at gardenia 2007 where he was the Chief Guest at the five day literary and cultural extravaganza.
Excerpts from the Interview:
Q. Why did your higher studies in another state. How did you cope with the change?
A. M S University in Baroda was one of the six Physiotherapy colleges in India and since I got through my entrance examinations, I decided to study at the Baroda managed to adapt to the change by learning the local language, in this case Gujarati.
Q: What steered you towards Cricket as field of specialization?
A: I had already decided upon sports as my chosen field of expertise. Hanuman Singh, the then selector of Indian Cricket Team offered me the post of Team Physiotherapist and so I went already with it.
Q: Indian Cricket Team is packed with players of great stature. How did you deal with the egos of the team members?
A: I had already worked with some members of the film fraternity and working with these cricketers was not very different. All it required was a lot of Psychology.
Q: You spoke about Medical Tourism, Tell us about it?
A: Due to the high standards of living, health and medicine is very expensive in most Western countries. So they fly people down to India as it faster, more affordable and more reliable. We should look at it as a major means of earning revenue.
Q: What do you attribute your success-talent or hard work?
A: According to me, talent derives itself from hard work, but most importantly, parents play a major role in a person's success.
Q: How has your stint at IIM-B been? What is the focus of your newsletter?
A: When joined, I had no clue about the world of business. I have picked up things along the way and when you work in an institution of such stature, there is a visible difference in standards,
scales and expectations. You get exposure at a different level all together.
