Teachers have been, and continue to be most influential persons in Tthe lives of several people. The experiences of those who have gone through their schooling reveal a unique relationship. It is a relationship that goes beyond books or academics. A life that touches on several values we hold dear. That teachers have influence on eternity was evident as students and the teachers walked to a warm reception at Garden City College on the occasion of Teachers' Day. The teachers and the staff at the college can now look forward to a rare employment guarantees not witnessed in any of the city's colleges. In a touching gesture, the Chairman of the college, Dr. Joseph V.G announced the new employment guarantees, terminal benefit schemes, allowances for sabbatical, grants for foreign trips and loan schemes. But the most important aspect of the scheme was the terminal benefit allowance, grants for foreign trips ands publication of academic related works in journals that is bound to inspire great confidence and professionalism amongst those in a profession often given a step motherly treatment. Earlier, a teacher incentive encouraging research and professionalism was announced by the college. There was no dearth of emotions as many of the students recalled the contributions of teachers in their lives. A significant function in the calendar of the colleges, September 5 is commemorated as Teachers' day in memory of Dr. Radhakrishnan, an outstanding teacher of remarkable qualities who rose to hold the highest office in the land. Words of inspiration, well scripted messages, poems, cut outs amongst others were some of the innovative ways the students came up with to usher the festivities of the day. What a splendid sight to behold! The formal function was conducted at the college auditorium. His Lordship Justice Dr. V.S. Malimath, former Chief Justice of the High Courts of Kerala and Karnataka and a member of the Human Rights Commission of India was the chief guest. Professor V.B. Coutinho, former Vice Chancellor, Gulbarga University and President, GCC - Governing Council delivered the felicitation speech while Dr. Joseph V.G., chairman, Garden City Group of Institutions presided over the function. The function began by evoking God's blessings and floral compliments to Dr. Radhakrishnan. Dr. Malimath endeared himself to the gathering when he called upon the teachers to continue with the great work they are doing. “This is the only profession where the way you conduct yourself counts in the lives of others,” he said. Reminiscing over his college days, the former Justice emphasized on the sanctity of the profession and reminded the teachers of the responsibilities before them. Also, he was all in praise of Garden City College for upholding the traditions like discipline and encouraging the teachers to go beyond academics. In a touching gesture, the chairman, Dr. Joseph VG felicitated Dr. Janardhanan, Professor, Canara Bank School of Management Studies, Banaglore University and Dr. Pradeep Siddheswar, Professor and Chairperson, Masters of Computer Applications, BU who were unanimously agreed upon by the management to be honoured for their outstanding contribution to the teaching profession.
