Worried and confused, Sanjay's parents took him to a psychologist who in turn referred them to a NGO working with people suffering from mental instability and other psychological related problems. The NGO, Oasis is the brain child of Dr. Arjun Sarkar (Psychiatrist) and Dr. Emilia. Oasis primarily started with two rooms, in Madhyamgram (WB) in the year 1998. Within short span of time, Oasis extended its care for people in New Delhi, Pune and New Zealand as well. It is a NGO that works solely through funds raised by the doctors associated with the organization, well wishers and sponsors throughout the world. Oasis is not a hospital, but a home where one can get care and emotional support. The doctors at first conducted a CT scan on Sanjay. Soon, they started treating Sanjay. Unfortunately, within a period of three months, his condition continued to deteriorate and Sanjay could hardly recognize anyone, except his mother. He even forgot his name and school. Adverse situations increased as his left leg became partially paralysed. Sanjay was treated under the supervision of Dr. Ashish Aggarwal and Dr. Ramanath Sen. “Sanjay's condition was worsening day by day as we have to keep him under constant supervision, we gave him high doses of medicines like Zimmer-500, Noxdac.t- 500 which we generally do not prefer using”, said Dr. Aggarwal. On the other hand Sanjay went through physiotherapy and some physical exercises. Medical treatment went on for more than three years as Sanjay started walking with support and slowly recalled his name, hometown and identified his father. All this time, his family stayed with him, except his father who often went for his business. “All these years we had a tough time, the whole family was anxious about Sanjay's condition and now that we are smiling is only for the doctors,” said Oasis – A Success Story Urmila Devi, Sanjay's mother. Now he is developing everyday, he has started studying from the NGO itself and has learned making leather footwear. There are thousands of NGO's like Oasis that work as a united platform to fight human exploitation. There are many teens like Sanjay who can be brought back to the mainstream and lead a normal life. The present society is well equipped with all the necessities of modern living but devoid of the basic feelings of love and affection for the mentally challenged members of their family. To be precise and direct, we lack that 'mental firmness' to accept our family members when they need our help and assistance. NGO's like Oasis are trying to form a sensitive community of their own which will assist such marginalised members of our society. The doctors and those who work with these people don’t find them different. We Care Point of View GCC World, October 2007 27 They still believe that these people should not be ignored since they need some extra care and warmth from their dear ones. People like us who have been blessed by the Almighty God, with powers to understand and analyse, must show fullest concern for those who have just temporarily lost the course of life and bring them back to their normal self. We must understand, it is not any credit on our part to stand beside them but a responsibility to hold their hand and walk with them through the ups and downs of life. We must extend our hand of love and friendship. Let us take an oath along the lines of Sir Isaac Newton: “A life, full of friends, is a life worth living or make your life unfriendly.” Let us be better human beings and make our world a better place to live in.
