Everyone's in sight heard 'Jai Hind'. The aura of a free India had already occupied its place Eas we all set for the celebration of India's 60th Independence Day. The pride reflected on every face on campus. It was undoubtedly a day for a commemoration. The struggles for liberation from the British Rule and the battles that our freedom fighters fought came to our mind when we saw the flag flying high.
August 15, in the Indian calendar is considered to be a 'holiday' where lazy souls dream about hoisting the flag. But, it was not the same with the students of the Garden City College; they did mark the day with active participation. There were students queuing one after another under the scorching heat and the NCC cadets and NSS volunteers. It was then time to salute the nation. The Guest of Honour on the occasion was Mr. M Subhash, Deputy General, Syndicate Bank.
In his address to the gathering, he noted that India is in the top list in almost every field and has progressed by leaps and bounds. “The Indian flag personifies the struggle of our freedom fighters,” he said. Focussing on the students, he asked them to imbibe ethical and moral values that will make the country proud. Further, he encouraged the students to work for the upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden in the society besidespromoting education at all levels.
Dr. Joseph. VG, chairman, called upon the students to interact with people associated with the freedom struggle. He also stressed upon the importance of taking part in elections exercise to elect the right leaders forthe country.
The National Anthem was then sung with great enthusiasm and followed by inspection of the parade by the guest.
A student representative of NSS spoke on the importance of Independence Day. Then we heard; 'Han ye rasta hai tera' a song from 'Lakshya' performed by an a volunteerof NSS. Later in the day, the ATM at GCC was inaugurated.
