Nuclear deal with America is still in troubled waters in India. The opposition is demanding a discussion on the nuclear deal under rules that voting can take place. The Opposition as well as Left parties have staged walkouts and protests during the Prime Minister's statement.
Though the Left parties have now agreed for a dialogue with the Prime Minister, the stalemate with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) continues.
The nuclear deal has been the reason for many conflicts between the ruling coalition their allies, that is the Left Parties have also not bought the idea whole heartedly.
All these protests and concerns seem a little absurd when major points in the deal have been cleared. There are undoubtedly pros and cons but they need to be weighed carefully. The nuclear deal can play an important role in ending India's isolation from the world on the nuclear field.
Besides, we are a growing country with high energy requirements. Nuclear deal can prove to be helpful in meeting future requirements. If the opposition and left parties feel otherwise, they should back up their concerns with strong proofs and logic. There is no point in opposing something just for the sake of opposing it.
Rather than a matter of national interest, the opposition is treating it as a diplomatic triumph for the Manmohan Singh government. If their concerns are genuine, they should first listen to the Prime Minister and then decide their course of action.
The question remains whether these parties would have reacted similarly if their government was in power? After all politicians always sing a different tune when they are in power.
